FDA bans Red No. 3, the popularly-used carcinogenic food dye

The FDA has banned Red No. 3, a synthetic dye used in many popular snacks and beverages, due to its potential cancer risks observed in animal studies.

This decision, echoing concerns raised by advocacy groups and aligned with similar regulations in cosmetics, will require manufacturers to phase out the dye by January 2027.

While some companies are already reformulating their products, the ban raises broader questions about other food color additives, as experts call for increased scrutiny of their safety.
